Research Sharing and Discussion : Building a rights-based child health equity framework for climate-related disasters

FH UNS – Sebagai bagian dari skema Pembelajaran Kemahasiswaan Berbasis Riset dan Kolaborasi Global, Fakultas Hukum Universitas Sebelas Maret (FH UNS) menyelenggarakan kegiatan “Research Sharing and Discussion” bertajuk “Co-creating A Right To Health Based Framework: Advancing Child Health Equity in Climate-related Disaster.” Kegiatan ini berlangsung pada Kamis, 24 Juli 2025, di Ruang Pertamina, Gedung Pascasarjana FH UNS.

Acara ini menghadirkan dua pembicara utama yaitu Kajal Khanna, MD, JD, MSc, FAAP dari Stanford University dan Monique Van Cauwenberghe, LLM, MA dari University of Groningen.

Dalam sesi pertamanya, Kajal Khanna memaparkan materi berjudul “Right to Health Indicators: A Primer” yang membahas bagaimana indikator hak atas kesehatan dapat digunakan untuk merancang kebijakan yang adil bagi anak-anak, terutama dalam konteks bencana iklim. Ia juga menekankan pentingnya pendekatan berbasis data dan hak asasi manusia dalam setiap proses pengambilan keputusan kebijakan publik

Sementara itu, Dr. Marlies Hesselman (University of Groningen) membawakan presentasi bertajuk “Human Rights in the Full Disaster Cycle” yang menyoroti pentingnya perlindungan anak dalam seluruh siklus bencana—dari mitigasi hingga pemulihan. Ia menjelaskan bagaimana integrasi pendekatan hak asasi manusia dapat memperkuat ketahanan sistem kesehatan anak dalam menghadapi bencana.

Kegiatan ini merupakan kolaborasi anatara FH UNS dengan tim riset yaitu David Patterson, Monique Van Cauwenberghe, LLM, MA (University Of Groningen), Dr. Erna Dyah Kusumawati (FH UNS), dan Dr. Ratna Juwita (Universitas Atma Jaya Yogyakarta), serta partisipasi aktif dari mahasiswa S3 dan dosen Fakultas Hukum UNS.

Diskusi berlangsung secara aktif dan interaktif, dengan pertukaran ide dan wawasan yang memperkaya pemahaman lintas perspektif. Kegiatan ini membuka peluang kolaborasi riset berkelanjutan di bidang hak anak dan kebijakan iklim berbasis kesehatan.

Kegiatan ini sejalan dengan komitmen UNS dalam mendukung pencapaian beberapa Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), khususnya SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) untuk menjamin hidup sehat dan mendukung kesejahteraan, SDG 4 (Quality Education) untuk pendidikan berkualitas, SDG 13 (Climate Action) untuk mengatasi perubahan iklim, serta SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) yang menekankan pentingnya kemitraan global.

Dalam sesi penutup, para pembicara memberikan respons positif terhadap antusiasme peserta. Kajal Khanna menyampaikan bahwa forum ini memberikan ruang diskusi yang sangat berharga untuk memperluas koneksi dan pertukaran pemikiran lintas negara. Dr. Marlies Hesselman (University of Groningen)juga menekankan bahwa interaksi dalam diskusi ini mencerminkan pentingnya kerja sama lintas disiplin dalam menghadapi tantangan kesehatan anak dan iklim secara global.

FH UNS – As part of the Research-Based Student Learning and Global Collaboration scheme , the Faculty of Law, Sebelas Maret University ( FH UNS ) held a “Research Sharing and Discussion” activity entitled “Co-creating A Right To Health Based Framework: Advancing Child Health Equity in Climate-related Disaster.” This activity took place on Thursday, July 24, 2025, in the Pertamina Room, FH UNS Postgraduate Building .

The event featured two keynote speakers, Kajal Khanna, MD, JD, MSc, FAAP from Stanford University and Monique Van Cauwenberghe, LLM, MA from the University of Groningen.

In her first session, Kajal Khanna presented a presentation titled “Right to Health Indicators: A Primer,” which discussed how right to health indicators can be used to design equitable policies for children, particularly in the context of climate disasters. She also emphasized the importance of a data-driven and human rights-based approach in every public policy decision-making process.

Meanwhile, Dr. Marlies Hesselman (University of Groningen) delivered a presentation titled “Human Rights in the Full Disaster Cycle,” highlighting the importance of child protection throughout the disaster cycle—from mitigation to recovery. She explained how integrating a human rights approach can strengthen the resilience of child health systems in the face of disasters.

This activity is a collaboration between the Faculty of Law UNS and the research team, namely David Patterson, Monique Van Cauwenberghe, LLM, MA (University of Groningen), Dr. Erna Dyah Kusumawati ( FH UNS ), and Dr. Ratna Juwita (Atma Jaya University Yogyakarta), as well as the active participation of doctoral students and lecturers of the Faculty of Law UNS.

The discussion was lively and interactive, with an exchange of ideas and insights that enriched understanding across perspectives. This activity opened up opportunities for ongoing research collaboration in the areas of children’s rights and health-based climate policy.

This activity is in line with UNS‘s commitment to supporting the achievement of several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) to ensure healthy living and support well-being, SDG 4 (Quality Education) for quality education, SDG 13 (Climate Action) to address climate change, and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) which emphasizes the importance of global partnerships.

In the closing session, the speakers responded positively to the participants’ enthusiasm. Kajal Khanna stated that the forum provided a valuable discussion space for expanding connections and exchanging ideas across countries. Dr. Marlies Hesselman (University of Groningen) also emphasized that the interaction in the discussion reflected the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in addressing global child health and climate challenges.

FH UNS remains committed to promoting research-based legal education and international collaboration as a concrete effort to address global challenges and build a more inclusive and equitable future.
